“Crossed Sabres: a History of the Fifth Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry”
Join us on March 22, 2019 at Maggiano’s Italian Restaurant for our next MHSM Friday Luncheon Series with guest speaker and MHSM Director Dr. John “Jack” Warner, Jr., who will be discussing his book Crossed Sabres: a History of the Fifth Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry.
Crossed Sabres: a History of the Fifth Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry focuses on the only African American cavalry regiment raised in the northern states during the Civil War. This book chronicles the recruiting, training and deployment of one of only four African-American regiments to retain its state designation.
Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew wanted the state that had made history with the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Massachusetts Infantry Volunteers to continue the noble experiment with uniformed black men on horseback. Crossed Sabres is the story of an alliance between black enlisted men who made their way to Massachusetts from all over the country and the white officers – some from the most prominent families in the Bay State – who eagerly sought to lead them.
This story, perhaps overshadowed by the bloody martyrdom of their brothers in the infantry regiments, needs to be told after more than a hundred years of silence.
Lunch menu: Chef’s Choice $25.00 (pay via mail, at lunch, or through the website).
RSVP by March 20th here on our website or by mail to: Wayne Ludwig, MHSM Events Coordinator, 3 Hawley St., Woburn, MA 01801 or by email to: firstname.lastname@example.org
